Free Preventive Care Benefits Health Plans Must Offer

To comply with the Affordable Care Act, health insurance plans must offer free preventive care benefits to all policyholders.

Under the Affordable Care Act, all Marketplace available health plans must cover a list of preventive services at no costs, without charging a copayment or coinsurance, even if you haven’t met your yearly deductible.

Free Preventive Care Benefits for Adults

As listed on HealthCare.gov, preventive services for adults include:

  • 1. Abdominal aortic aneurysm one-time screening for men

  • 2. Alcohol misuse screening and counselling

  • 3. Aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease and colorectal cancer

  • 4. Blood pressure screening

  • 5. Cholesterol screening

  • 6. Colorectal cancer screening

  • 7. Depression screening

  • 8. Diabetes (Type 2) screening

  • 9. Diet counselling for adults at higher risk for chronic disease

  • 10. Falls prevention

  • 11. Hepatitis B screening

  • 12. Hepatitis C screening

  • 13. HIV screening

  • 14. Immunization vaccines for adults

  • 15. Lung cancer screening

  • 16. Obesity screening and counselling

  • 17. Sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention counselling

  • 18. Statin preventive medication

  • 19. Syphilis screening

  • 20. Tobacco use screening and cessation interventions for tobacco users

  • 21. Tuberculosis screening

Please note that these services must be delivered by a doctor or provider in your plan’s network in order to be free.

Free Preventive Care for Women

Women benefit from additional free preventive care services, as long as they’re delivered by an in-network provider. These include, but are not limited to regular well-woman visits, breast and cervical cancer screening, osteoporosis and STD screening, as well as care related to family planning, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Free Preventive Care for Children

Free preventive care for children includes immunizations, development check-ups and screening for common chronic diseases and developmental disorders.
